Acknowledging our own privilege and power dynamics are an important part of holding space for others, especially in marginalized communities. It is not enough to merely state an offering is “open to everyone” without taking actionable steps to make it physically, emotionally, and financially inclusive. Part of being a ‘trauma-informed’ practitioner includes understanding the ongoing systemic and societal limits so many humans face daily, and how they may show up in the nervous system and interpersonal relationships.
Bonnie will lead the group by beginning with a practice of examining our own inherent privilege and power, identify our strengths, as well as areas for growth. You will learn tangible ways to “bridge the gaps” in knowledge. You’ll walk away with new vocabulary and language cues, inclusive marketing tactics, a more expansive trauma-informed lens, and resources to develop these ideas further on your own.
Bonnie Abbott is an educator by nature, with over 15 years in childcare and education spaces. She taught elementary music for six years for Washington County PS. During that time, she witnessed so many students and staff struggling with anxiety, trauma, and grief, that she was inspired to teach emotional content rather than continue with public education. Now, Bonnie works with Give Rise Studio, Sol Yoga, and Yogamour providing regular classes for children and adults. Some of her class offerings include: Yoga for Kids, Tweens, and Teens; Queer & Trans Gentle Yoga; Accessible/Chair Yoga; and Yoga for Larger Bodies. She is also employed with the Children's Advocacy Center instructing trauma-informed yoga sessions to child survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
Bonnie holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Education, a 200-Hour Registered Yoga Teacher Certification, and two separate Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher Certifications (2020 and 2022). Bonnie is also an experienced nanny and child care provider, with current Red Cross CPR/AED certifications.
