New Moon Ritual, Restoratives and Yoga Nidra: Sturgeon Moon

  • Roots & River United States (map)

Moon rituals are a magical way to connect with the natural cycles of life and nature. New moons remind us to check in with the parts of ourselves that are expanding and the areas of our lives that are experiencing new beginnings. In yogic philosophy, one big obstacle to letting go of suffering is what lives in our unconsciousness. As the new moon begins in darkness, we can use Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra to explore the parts of us that are in the shadows to bring us into our own light.

The Sturgeon New Moon is named for when the sturgeon were easiest to catch in the Great Lakes. The word sturgeon means “stirrer” because these fish tend to spend their time at the bottom of the lake, stirring up the mud and looking for food. We can use this stirring energy as medicine by leaning into stuck emotions that have come up from the mud and meet them with tenderness. Let’s lean into the new moon with compassion as Carrie brings together the community to cool the summer’s heat in a ritual of rest and setting intentions for the next phase.
